The Different Noises and What Each Means

Not all water heater noises are the same. Here is how to identify what you are hearing:

Popping or Crackling

Cause: Sediment on the tank floor — water boiling beneath the scale crust. The most common noise in LA homes.

Urgency: Medium-high. Address within the next few months. The longer it goes, the harder the scale becomes and the less effective flushing will be.

Rumbling or Kettling

Cause: Heavy sediment accumulation — a more advanced stage than popping. The entire tank floor is covered and the boiling is more sustained.

Banging or Knocking (when taps open/close)

Cause: Water hammer — pressure surge in the pipes when water flow is suddenly stopped. This is a plumbing issue rather than a water heater issue, though it is often noticed near the water heater where main supply lines run.

Fix: Water hammer arrestors installed on the supply lines. Not related to sediment.

Ticking or Tapping (during heating cycles)

Cause: Expansion and contraction of metal pipes and straps as they heat and cool. Generally normal, particularly in older homes with copper supply lines. Loose pipe straps can make this more pronounced.

Fix: Usually no action needed. Loose straps can be tightened.

Hissing or Sizzling

Cause: Water dripping onto the burner or a hot surface — typically from a leak at a fitting, valve, or the T&P relief valve. This is a different problem from sediment noise and needs prompt attention.

Fix: Locate the source of the drip. Call us if you cannot identify it or if it is coming from the tank body itself.

How to Fix a Popping Water Heater

Step 1: Flush the Tank

Tank flushing removes loose sediment before it hardens further. Here is the basic process:

  1. Turn the water heater to pilot (gas) or off (electric)
  2. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the base of the tank
  3. Run the hose to a drain or outside — the water will be hot and discolored
  4. Open a hot water tap inside to allow air in
  5. Open the drain valve and let the tank drain until the water runs clear
  6. Close the drain valve, remove the hose, let the tank refill, then relight or turn back on

Important caveats for LA homes: If your tank has not been flushed in several years, the drain valve itself may be clogged with sediment, or the sediment layer may have hardened enough that flushing does not significantly move it. In these cases, forcing a flush can actually cause the drain valve to fail to reseat properly — leaving you with a dripping valve. If your tank is over 6 years old and has never been flushed, we recommend having a professional handle it rather than attempting DIY.

Step 2: Inspect the Anode Rod

The sacrificial anode rod protects the tank interior from corrosion by attracting corrosive elements to itself. In LA's hard water it depletes faster than the label suggests — often needing replacement every 2–3 years rather than the standard 4–5. A depleted anode rod leaves the tank unprotected and accelerates the process that turns sediment noise into tank failure.

Step 3: Assess Whether Flushing Fixed It

After flushing, run the unit through a full heating cycle and listen. If the noise is significantly reduced or gone, flushing was effective and you should schedule annual maintenance going forward. If the noise persists at the same level, the sediment has hardened beyond what flushing can address — at that point a professional assessment is needed to determine whether the tank can be salvaged or replacement is the better investment.

When the Popping Means It's Time to Replace
